One-week course in Gravity and Height for National Mapping and Geodetic Surveying

Target Group:

  1. Staff of national mapping agencies, public authorities and other organisations with responsibility for height determination and maintenance;
  2. PhD and Masters students seeking specialist knowledge on national height systems. 

Tuition Fee: €500

This intensive one-week residential course is organised and administered by EuroSDR, a pan-European organisa-tion linking the research and education needs of national GI production organisations with research and teaching Institutes in eighteen European countries.

Lectures and tutorials will be delivered by experts from Lantmäteriet (the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority - Geodesy Department), the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) and the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). Content has been designed with the assistance of Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi).

Successful participants in the course will be awarded 5 ECTS-credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumula-tion System) by The Dublin Institute of Technology. The course will be validated by DIT as equivalent in stan-dard to Masters Degree level - Level 9 of the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) of Ireland (http://www.qqi.ie/Pages/National-Framework-of-Qualifications-(NFQ).aspx).

The following topics are covered:
Theoretical foundations of the Earth’s gravity field; Surface spherical harmonics; Coordinate Reference Frames for Geographical Information; The geoid; Heights; Topographical reductions; Stokes’s problem; Height determination methods; Vertical Datums and Levelling Networks; Im-plementation Considerations
