Workshop Report

3D Digital Landscape Models - From 2D cartographic to 3D topographic data
11th to 12th March, 2010, Dublin, Ireland

With the evolution of technologies for three-dimensional data acquisition, data han-dling and data representation, the future for three-dimensional geodata has already begun.

Three-dimensional City, Landscape and Terrain models are new or used differently than before. Whereas small size projects typically may start from scratch, this is cur-rently unfeasible for country-wide models. Here existing 2D (cartographic) data has to be taken into account in order to derive valuable three-dimensional information. The conference dealt with the opportunities and challenges of
--Migrating 2D cartographic data to 3D topographic data
--Fusion of 2D and 3D data
--Positional accuracy improvement
--Definition of 3D country-wide models

The workshop was attended by more than 30 participants from mapping agencies, industries and research institutes.
During the break-out sessions it was agreed that the seen presentations had the following in common:
--Great potential
--Project-wise approaches
--Focus on man-made structures, in particular buildings
--Sexy visualization (partly beyond data sets)

But it was also mentioned that some topics were missing from the presentations, such as:
--Data models
--Meta data
--Maintenance of data
--Consistency of different data sources
--Managing reference data
--Sustainability
--Others than buildings (vegetation, rural areas, topographic features)

After two half days of intense discussions the audience agreed on the following action items:
--Integrate the ideas of this workshop in the upcoming EuroSDR Rolling Re-search Plan
--Organize a 2nd Workshop already in November 2010
--The workshop should be focussed on the 3 lines: (1) 3D Landscape Models, (2) 3D City Models, and (3) 3D Data Structures/3D Databases/3D Standards
