For five consecutive days, Paris was the centre of the world for crowdsourcing and Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI)! After State of the Map 2026 (the annual event for all mappers and OpenStreetMap users hosted during three days by Géodata Paris), EuroSDR invited NMCAs, researchers, OSM communities, public authorities, and industry together to explore the new frontiers of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) in the era of geocommons, digital twins, and AI, for a Workshop held on 31 August–1 September 2026 at IGN France, Paris.

Twenty-five people answered the call—with more than half having actually taken part in both Paris events. Through presentations, keynote and interactive and breakout sessions, the discussions focused on how institutions, communities and AI can work together to create geographic knowledge now, and in the future. Driven by lively and engaged discussions, the participants decided during the final session of the workshop to embark on a collaborative effort to draft a position paper on the future of VGI.
