Workshop on RPAS Positioning and Orientation

5 - 6 June 2023 (National Innovation Centre for Data, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK)

This workshop has been cancelled.

Location: National Innovation Centre for Data, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Monday 5th - Tuesday 6th June 2023
Provisional Programme

A desirable development in any form of airborne surveying is the freeing of processing pipelines from the need for supporting terrestrial information in terms of ground control and/or local Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) base stations. Opinions vary as to what extent this is feasible for high quality geometric survey, but it is clear that its ultimate achievement would bring significant time and cost benefits to industry and National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCAs). The EuroSDR (see http://www.eurosdr.net/) Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) benchmark ran throughout 2022 with the aim of evaluating the true geometric quality of real-world survey data generated from RPAS survey in the absence of ground control and GNSS base stations (see the project website at https://geospatialncl.github.io/eurosdr-rpas-benchmark/ for further details).

You are invited to join this EuroSDR Workshop at the National Innovation Centre for Data at Newcastle University, The Catalyst, Newcastle Helix, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (please see https://www.thecatalystnewcastle.co.uk/ for directions), where the results of the Benchmark will be presented. To widen discussion, we also encourage participants to present their own findings on the topic as oral presentations at the Workshop. Authors wishing to submit an abstract for consideration should provide a title and 200 word abstract either at point of registration (submit details at checkout using registration link below) or by email to Jon Mills (jon.mills@newcastle.ac.uk) by Monday 1st May 2023. Speakers will be advised as to paper acceptance at the latest by Monday 15th May. Presentations are welcome from representatives of NMCAs, industry and academia. Full papers will not be published, but we encourage participants to share their slides with delegates and the EuroSDR community - we will provide a means to do this post-workshop.

To encourage participation, the event has only a modest registration fee of €50 for full delegates and €25 for students (undergraduate, masters and PhDs) / retirees. All refreshments (tea, coffee breaks and lunches) are included in the registration cost. On the evening of Monday 5th June, all participants are invited to join a social dinner, venue and cost TBC (NB any organisation interested in sponsoring the dinner, please contact Jon Mills at the email address below). Registration will close on Monday 29th May 2023 or immediately once all workshop places are allocated. The registration form is now available at the following link:
